The UPWARDS members presented their individual research findings from the past week. Nada, who was assigned to our lab, also presented her research on “Increasing the High-Voltage Resistance of Transistors on SOI,” and the program concluded successfully.
Although it was a short time, we gained a lot of valuable inspiration. Let’s all keep doing our best, even though we’re apart!
We attended a welcome party for UPWARDS members Nada (Terashima Lab) and Sami (Kondo Lab).
On the day of the event, we enjoyed a variety of dishes—not limited to Japanese cuisine—and had a great time socializing in a lively atmosphere from start to finish.
Let’s give it our all in everything—from research to sightseeing—for the second half of our stay!
I was also able to interact with UPWARDS members assigned to other labs, and it was a very rewarding experience. It’s only for a short time, but I look forward to working with you all!
As part of the UPWARDS program, which aims to advance the field of semiconductors, NADA ELHARIS MOHAMED (from Virginia Tech) has joined our lab. We will be conducting research together until the presentation on August 5. We hope you enjoy sightseeing in Japan!
We held a celebration for our fourth-year undergraduate students who passed their graduate school entrance exams. Congratulations to everyone, and best of luck with your studies in graduate school!

We had a barbecue at seven of the student research rooms used by the Terashima Lab.
Although many of the students were meeting each other for the first time, the event was a fun and friendly gathering from start to finish.

On June 4, we hosted a special lecture featuring Mr. Katsumitsu Nakamura from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation’s Power Device Works, Power Device Design Department.
He gave a lecture on the topic of “Si-based Power Semiconductor (IGBT, Diode) Technology” as part of the “Introduction to Semiconductor Technology” course. He provided a multifaceted perspective, covering not only the latest technologies in power devices and key considerations in research and development, but also the essential aspects of advancing development as a technical professional within a company. It was a very informative experience.
Participants joined the hybrid online lecture from various locations. The speaker answered each of the enthusiastic questions from students and faculty members thoughtfully and in detail, making it a very meaningful session.

We participated in the annual inter-lab softball tournament as the “Kondo & Terashima Joint Lab Team”!
Under clear May skies, a fiercely contested match unfolded. Because of the advantage system—where each female player is awarded one point—our team actually started every match with a 5-point lead! ✌ We advanced from the preliminary round and even secured one win in the lower bracket of the finals! It was a great opportunity to build camaraderie across lab boundaries.
Aiming for a championship victory in the upcoming autumn tournament, we plan to sneak in some batting practices during our research breaks!
With the arrival of April, two new fourth-year undergraduates have joined the Terashima Lab. To celebrate, we held a welcome party for the new students in collaboration with Kondo Laboratory, with whom we share a seminar and have a close relationship!
Faculty staff, senior students, and newcomers gathered together. While our new students were a bit nervous at first, they quickly hit it off through great food and lively conversations about lab daily life, hobbies, and personal interests. Senior students shared valuable advice regarding upcoming research schedules and fond memories of past lab activities, making it an incredibly energetic and heartwarming gathering.
With these new faces joining our team, the laboratory environment has become even more vibrant. To our new 4th-year students: let’s stay healthy and work together diligently as we head into our respective research projects!
